Collecting Maple Sap

Syrup Buckets
Syrup Buckets
The syrup runs out of the tree into buckets. These buckets in turn are emptied into other pails which we then carry.
The rolling tank
The rolling tank
A small tractor pulls this 100 gallon tank. The buckets are emptied into this resevoir. There are 500 buckets out right now and we filled the tank five times.
The trailer tanks
The trailer tanks
When the mobile tank is full it goes back to the road and the sap is pumped into another tank on a trailer.

The trailer can carry 300 gallons of sap plus another 100 gallons in the mobile tank. The pails can fill every 24 hours if conditions are good.
Lighting the fires
Lighting the fires
While we went off for more sap at the other maple bush Marian and Bob got the fires started in the evaporator. It takes over an hours for the fires to get hot enough to start the sap boiling.
